If you’re scheduling a screening, you may be wondering: how long does a mammogram take?
At Elizabeth Wende Breast Care (EWBC), we understand your time is valuable. That’s why we’ve designed our patient experience to be efficient, comfortable, and focused on your health.
How Long Does a Mammogram Take?
- Imaging time: About 10–15 minutes
- Total appointment time: Approximately 20–30 minutes
Most patients are pleasantly surprised by how quick and streamlined the process is.
What Happens During a Mammogram Appointment?
Knowing what to expect can help you feel more comfortable before your visit.
Check-In
When you arrive, our team will:
- Confirm your information and screening details
- Answer any questions you may have
- Help ensure everything is ready for your exam
If you’re visiting EWBC for the first time, check-in may take a few extra minutes.
Your Mammogram
During the exam:
- A specially trained technologist will guide you through each step
- Each breast will be gently positioned to capture high-quality images
- Compression will be applied briefly – typically just a few seconds for each image
Compression helps produce the clearest images possible while using the lowest radiation dose and minimizing the need for repeat imaging.
After Your Exam
Once your mammogram is complete:
- You can return to your normal day immediately
- There is no recovery time or downtime required
When Will I Get My Mammogram Results?
For most screening mammograms performed at EWBC, results are available on the same day – often within just a couple of hours.
If additional imaging is recommended, our team will contact you promptly and guide you through the next steps.
Why Mammograms Are Worth Your Time
Mammograms are the most effective tools for early breast cancer detection. They can:
- Detect breast cancer before symptoms appear
- Diagnose breast cancer early when treatment is the most effective
- Provides reassurance and clarity about your breast health
A screening mammogram is a small investment of time that can have a significant impact on your long-term health.
The Bottom Line
If you’ve been putting off your screening because you’re worried it will take too much time, here’s the good news: a mammogram takes less than 30 minutes from check-in to completion. It is a quick appointment that can provide valuable peace of mind – and potentially save your life.
