Elizabeth Wende Breast Care (EWBC) has been at the forefront of breast imaging and patient centered care for five decades. As we mark our 50th anniversary, we honor a legacy built on innovation, compassion, and a steadfast commitment to early detection and best prognosis for our patients diagnosed with breast cancer.
EWBC has consistently led the way as a leader in breast health, setting national standards and redefining what patients can expect from their care.
Our Milestones
Among our most impactful milestones:
- Dedicated Breast Imaging Center EWBC was a pioneer in creating a specialized environment focused solely on breast health and the first in the country to give results to patients as they waited. (1975)
- Same-Day Results Since 1975, EWBC has offered same-day results, a practice that reduces anxiety and accelerates care decision
- Image-Guided Biopsies as an Alternative to Surgery This advancement allowed patients to avoid unnecessary surgical procedures while still receiving precise diagnoses and the first in our area to fight from insurers for approving stereotactic biopsy as an alternative to surgery (1990)
- Computer-Aided Detection (CAD) EWBC conducted and participated in early clinical studies in developing computer aided detection (CAD) as support in improving accuracy for the radiologist interpreting each mammogram
- Breast MRI and MRI Biopsy EWBC was a leader in our region in implementing dedicated breast MRI in a breast imaging center first seeking approval for several years from local technology and assessment boards for placement at our facility and subsequently approval for implementation clinically. EWBC participated with the landmark ACRIN trial 6667 that revealed the importance of performing MRI in patients newly diagnosed with breast cancer as additional cancers were found by MRI only. EWBC was instrumental in performing MRI guided needle biopsy for findings only seen on MRI. It even had a seminar 22 years ago teaching other physicians how to perform this procedure. advanced imaging technique to enhance diagnostic accuracy (2003)
- Research on 3D Mammography (Digital Breast Tomosynthesis-DBT) EWBC was involved in researching this exciting technology more than 16 years ago and was instrumental in its FDA approval. EWBC installed the first 3D mammography unit in our region (2009). While there was no reimbursement for this technology at the time, EWBC performed DBT on all patients regardless
- Same-Day Diagnostic Imaging Available to reduce anxiety and delay in diagnosis: We are very understanding of patient anxiety, and we make every effort to have you return as soon as possible if you chose to not wait for results and need to return for additional work up
- Implementation of a Cancer Risk Assessment & Genetics Program Risk Assessment with Integrated Lifetime Cancer Risk Assessments into Routine Care, every patient receives a personalized evaluation to guide future screening and prevention strategies identifying patients at higher risk for breast cancer.
- Bone Densitometry Evaluation Program pioneered in 1996 to further our commitment to women’s health. Recently, we enhanced our bone density testing services by incorporating advanced bone score software into bone density scans. This allows patients to receive their Trabecular Bone Score (TBS) during a DEXA scan, providing more detailed information about bone structure and strength, hence offering more personalized care. Bone densitometry with TBS is now our standard of care.
Behind every milestone is a team of dedicated professionals that work align with our expert breast imaging radiologists — bringing experience and a shared passion for patient care and breast health. Our staff’s commitment to excellence is evident in every interaction, from the moment a patient schedules an appointment to the delivery of results. This unwavering focus on quality and care has made EWBC a trusted leader in breast health for generations.
Over the past five decades, EWBC has expanded across New York State – with locations in Batavia, Brighton, Geneseo, Greece, Victor, Watertown, and Webster – each location reinforcing our commitment to accessibility and our mission to bring expert care closer to home.
“Our 50-year journey is marked by significant technological advancements in breast health. Early detection provides women with a better prognosis, and we strongly encourage women of average risk for breast cancer to get screened yearly starting at 40 (earlier if identified as high risk).” – Dr. Stamatia Destounis, Breast Imaging Radiologist and Managing Partner at EWBC, “As we look to the future, EWBC remains dedicated to innovation, education, and compassionate care. We will continue to lead with purpose, adapt with integrity, and serve with heart—just as we have for the past 50 years.”
