What is core biopsy?
A core biopsy is a reliable, minimally invasive method for determining if a mammographically, ultrasonographically or MRI detected lesion is cancerous. A small tissue sample is obtained with a large core needle, which is then sent to a pathologist to be read. The alternative to this method is a surgical biopsy.
What is stereotactic breast biopsy?
Stereotactic breast biopsy is a method of performing a core biopsy using digital mammographic imaging and a computer program that localizes the exact location of a tiny lesion within the breast. Using this technology, a small sample of tissue can be removed and sent to the pathologist. To see how a stereotactic core biopsy is performed, view the Stereotactic Biopsy movie in our Video Library.
How long does this procedure last?
The stereotactic core biopsy procedure usually takes about an hour. Only local anesthesia is used and most patients are able to return to their normal routine immediately afterward.
How is this procedure performed?
Most core biopsies at EWBC are performed on very small nonpalpable lesions. X-ray, ultrasound or MRI is used to guide the needle to the proper location within the breast tissue. Which method is used will depend on which method best visualizes the lesion.
When a lesion is seen only on the mammogram, x-ray must be used to find the lesion for biopsy. This is called stereotactic breast biopsy. This equipment allows us to use a computer and digital imaging to calculate the exact position of the lesion in the breast.
The core biopsy may cause some bruising or discomfort for a few days following the procedure. At EWBC, the results of the biopsy are generally available within 48 hours. Rarely, after the results of the needle biopsy have been obtained, the radiologist may recommend further studies such as repeat biopsy or surgical intervention.
